A MAYAN STAR BORN TO SHINE

Less than 14% of indigenous girls in Guatemala have access to secondary school. Cristina, the main character in A Mayan Star Born to Shine, represents one of them. She comes from a poor family with no academic tradition. As a girl, she and her family face the "double burden" (school fees + lost labor) that female schooling can represent. How will she into school and help get her family out of poverty?

This book, written by Amaris Espinosa and illustrated by Sabina Espinet, was inspired by the creative writings of 75 adolescents enrolled in the Starfish One by One program in Guatemala. Most of these students are the first members of their families to go beyond elementary school. They know exactly how hard Cristina's situation is because they live it everyday.

A Mayan Star Born to Shine follows Cristina on her path towards education and empowerment. It is ideal for children seeking to explore the value of education through the magical story of a girl in Guatemala.
