Starfish One by One - Empowering young women through education and mentorship to become leaders in their community.

"The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we had when we created them." -Einstein

RosaIn other words, what we need are new perspectives and talent. Few places need this more than Guatemala, a country with the worst gender inequality in the hemisphere. Rosa, who recently became the woman to complete high school in her community, is ready to share her talents and insights. Rosa’s story demonstrates the power of persistence. She did not start first grade until she was 8. She then had to stop her studies again for 2 years during middle school when her family lost motivation to keep daughters in school.

Thanks to the crucial help of her U.S. sponsors (the Barker Family) and the Starfish mentor, Rosa persevered. Along the way, she has launched a summer school in her community to make sure that indigenous children (half of whom usually have to repeat the first grade) get a running start on school. Today, at age 22, she is a member of Starfish’s first graduates. In January she starts university.
