RIPPLING THE GIRL EFFECT
Starfish One by One knows that each "Starfish" saved represents a powerful agent of change in a family, community and country. Each "Starfish" is precious and worthy of the organization's time and dedication. But the reality is that as an organization, it cannot save all of them.
The vision of the Starfish One by One program is to create and share a proven model that achieves the empowerment and education of young women in Guatemala and elsewhere. While there is an abundance of scholarship-focused programs around the world, Starfish believes that the empathetic, personalized support of a mentor is the "secret ingredient" that ensures that a young woman can make it through high school and beyond. Since launching its innovative model in 2008, Starfish One by One has aimed to ensure that other organizations are capable of replicating its model.
In August 2011, with the support of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters and the Coffee Trust, Starfish formally initiated the technical support of an organization named Fundación Ixil in its effort to replicate the Starfish model for 30 indigenous girls in the remote region of Ixil, Guatemala. Starfish has been providing personalized training for the staff of Fundación Ixil through field accompaniment, training visits to the Starfish operations, and the provision of systematized tools and guidelines. In January 2012, Fundación Ixil launched a mentorship-scholarship program in the poorest region in Guatemala.
Starfish One by One is ideally suited to provide this assistance due to:
- Its proven and systematized model designed to be replicated
- Its demonstrated capacity to collaborate with other organizations to acquire and share practice-proven methodologies and materials
- The contextual diversity of the Starfish beneficiaries and the subsequent need to keep its model accessible and relevant to a variety of populations).
